The purple hiking trail in Kanne takes you through the stunning nature of the Plateau of Caestert.
This route leads you from Kanne to the ENCI quarry and the Plateau of Caestert nature reserve, which stretches across the border between Flanders, the Netherlands, and Wallonia. The plateau is part of the well-known Sint-Pietersberg, which extends from Maastricht to just north of Liège. You’ll walk through rare hillside forests and unique chalk grasslands, which thrive on the marl soil that makes Riemst so special.
Face to face with a Mergelland sheep
Did you know that the Plateau of Caestert is grazed by Mergelland sheep? You might also spot them on the Tiendeberg. This local breed is recognizable by its long tail and the marl-like hue in its fleece. Can you find one? Share your photos with #visitriemst and tag @visitriemst!
This flock plays a vital role in preserving the plateau’s unique grasslands. Agile and low-maintenance, these sheep are the perfect natural caretakers of the steep slopes. They graze where modern machinery cannot reach, helping to maintain the characteristic landscape. Without them, the open fields would quickly become dense forests.
Take a break at Hoeve Caestert
Need a break along the way? Stop by Hoeve Caestert, a scenic picnic spot where you can relax while enjoying the view – and perhaps even spot the sheep! Then, continue your journey through a diverse landscape of forests, fields, meadows, and sunken lanes.
Tip! On Sundays, enjoy a drink at Villa Castrum and learn more about the area’s natural beauty. Villa Castrum is open every Sunday from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with activities throughout the year. Check their website for details.
