During your cycling tour through Riemst, you suddenly come across an Irish Cross and a large boulder in Lafelt, situated on the cycling network between nodes 540 and 124.
Centuries ago, Lafelt was the site of one of Limburg's bloodiest battles. The Irish Cross in Lafelt is a gift from Ireland in memory of the Battle of Lafelt on 2 July 1747. During this battle, an army of Irish mercenaries fought alongside the French against the Austrians.
Sound Experience
Press one of the posts surrounding the boulder to activate a soundtrack recreating the Battle of Lafelt. Sit on the boulder, take in the view of the former battlefield, and travel back in time to the late 18th century.
Landmark
The Irish Cross is one of the “landmarks” of the Albertkanaal Borderland. The other landmarks in Riemst can be found near the Bridge of Vroenhoven, on the Sieberg, and on Tiendeberg.
