Cycling Underground in Riemst

At the end of January 2025, Visit Limburg will submit an application for an environmental permit to realize "Cycling Underground" in Riemst.

Cycling Underground will be an underground cycling experience of 358 meters through an underground limestone quarry: "Mathus Quarry". This is a quarry that opens onto the towpath along the Albert Canal, between the bridges in Vroenhoven (cycling junction 557) and Kanne (cycling junction 402).

The municipality of Riemst has received an application for an environmental permit from Toerisme Limburg for the development of the cycling experience. Starting Saturday, March 8, the file will be available for consultation via the environmental desk. From then on, the public consultation will run until Sunday, April 6.

If the permit is granted, the work could, in theory, start in 2025.

Unique Underground Terrain in Riemst

The cycling experience highlights what makes Riemst unique: a landscape that is special both above and below ground. In addition to the many walks and tourist visits to the Kanne Caves and the Zichen Limestone Caves, the limestone landscape will now also be opened up for cyclists.

Opening Hours for Cycling Underground

To ensure minimal disturbance to the bats’ hibernation, the plan is to open Cycling Underground to cyclists for a fixed period after the official opening: from May 1 to September 15. After September 15, the cycling experience will close again until April 30. This period roughly coincides with the bats’ hibernation.
