Cycling Route War Traces (26 km)

You can perfectly explore the wartime history of Riemst and the surrounding area by bike. This 26-kilometer route takes you to important locations from World War II, where history and landscape come together.

The route starts at the Bridge of Vroenhoven, a place that makes an impression both historically and architecturally. Want more than just cycling? The experience center teaches you everything about the start of World War II in Belgium. The modern architecture of the bridge is also a perfect first photo opportunity!

Stopover in Kanne

From Vroenhoven, cycle towards Kanne and Eben-Emael. In Kanne, at the foot of the Slingerberg, you'll find a small military cemetery. It also offers a beautiful view of the Albert Canal and the marl landscape around the village.

Bunkers, anti-tank ditches, and the fort

No war-related route in the region is complete without a visit to the Fort of Eben-Emael. Once considered impregnable, this fort is an impressive underground remnant of World War II. The story of the German attack on this fort is fascinating, making this location absolutely worth visiting.

Other historical locations

Along the route, you will also discover lesser-known places that highlight Riemst's wartime history. In Lafelt, there is the Irish Cross, a memorial where you can relive the Battle of Lafelt through an audio clip. And during the second part of the route, you will undoubtedly spot the church of Herderen. Its tower was bombed during World War II. Although you can't see anything of it today, it's still a fascinating tidbit for lovers of local wartime history.
